The TUFS Mongolian major is one of the few courses in the world which allows students to study Mongolian culture and society with a foundation in the language. Internationally, Mongolian studies in Japan are known for its high level of achievement and we at TUFS have contributed to maintaining this level with our 100 years of history.
Our three staff members are experts in their respective fields of Mongolian history, literature and language and can handle the various interests of our students.
We welcome you to experience the beauty of Mongolian society, a uniquely nomadic society that is different from the Kanji-using, Confucian and sedentary societies in East Asia such as Japan, Korea and China.

Characteristics of the Curriculum
We train all our students to be able to use the language to a certain degree.
Textbooks produced for foreign students by National University of Mongolia
, as well as those edited by our staff based on their long years of experience are used.
As Mongolian has the same word order as Japanese, the language is relatively easy to learn for Japanese speakers. As a result, our focus is on understanding the grammatical characteristics that are different from Japanese, as well as on mastering sounds not found in the Japanese language. Besides a visiting professor, native instructors (part-time) are also deployed to teach right from the start so mastering the pronunciation is not difficult.
Careers After Graduation
Traditionally, many of our graduates choose to move on to graduate schools to carry out research in a variety of fields. Students have also found employment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JICA, where they can make use of their Mongolian. There are also students who are making use of their overseas study experience to become interpreters/translators, as well as taking part in ODA projects or working at the Mongolian Embassy in Japan. Many have also become teachers at junior and senior high schools. In addition, graduates have also found employment in the following industries: mass communications (Asahi Shimbun Company, NHK, Jiji Press), advertising (Dentsu, Hakuhodo), publishing (Shueisha, Kadokawa Shoten Publishing), manufacturing (Toyota Motors, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric), trading (Marubeni Corporation, Kanematsu Corporation).
